I just finished reading about Eugene & Minhee Cho. He’s a pastor in Seattle. She’s a housewife. Together they founded One Day’s Wages, “an international grassroots movement dedicated to ending extreme global poverty.” Like me, they have travelled and seen with their own eyes the faces of the children and heard the stories behind those in extreme poverty. As a result, they decided to donate their 2009 income to fight global poverty.
As I head back to Lesotho, Southern Africa, on November 5, I know that I will once again come face to face with the disparity in the world. Nearly 60% of the people in Lesotho live in poverty with many families living on less than $1 a day. I’ve held the tiny hand of the child that never knows when his next meal will come. I’ve watched as orphans gobble up their one measly meal of protein for the week.
I’ve listened to a grandmother beg for help for her grandchildren. On the flipside, I’ve seen the gratitude on orphaned sisters’ faces who have received bags of meal-meal grain. I’ve heard how families have been changed by the gift of piglets.
As I distribute the funds to the people in Lesotho, I’m grateful to see firsthand the difference that the donations to Anchor Your Life make. I’m not in a position of being able to give up a year’s salary, but I can give a month’s wages. Then I started to wonder…what could we do together? If everyone who was able, “gave up” one day of their annual wages, what could God do to help the people in Lesotho? I’m inviting you to consider how you might be a part of God’s Kingdom work helping the least of the least in Lesotho.
Our goal is to raise the funds for 40 piglets at $40 and 500 egg-laying chickens at $5 each. Pigs and chickens help families to become self-reliant, enabling them to step out of poverty and the dependency syndrome. Will you consider sharing some of the resources that God has entrusted to you, to help those who cannot help themselves?
